Peer-Mentoring Program Update

Montana Education Partnership is excited to partner with the Youth Service America, State Farm, and Helena School District and its teachers, SACC staff (SACC is Helena School District’s official School Age Child Care program), and students to create pathways that increase opportunities for students to become community leaders, earn credit through service, and be recognized for their efforts by the Helena community and its schools.
Montana Education Partnership and its AmeriCorps VISTA member have been developing an out-of-school time, accredited, mentoring and service-learning initiative. In partnership with the Youth Service America’s State Farm Good Neighbor Student Achievement Semester of Service, and Helena School District, Montana Education Partnership is training, monitoring, leading reflections, evaluating, and ideally recommending credit for participating high school students.
Beginning this fall, Montana Education Partnership is engaging high school students to be tutors and mentors. These students are implementing service-learning projects with their elementary school buddies attending SACC’s after-school programs. Upon completion, high school students will receive credit on their transcripts for their participation.

MEP and the YMCA

Montana Education Partnership has been working closely with the YMCA’s service-learning summer program. Montana Education Partnership is helping to create opportunities for participating middle school students to connect with service projects throughout the Helena community.  These projects have included revitalizing a garden for seniors in partnership with the Helena Housing Authority, as well as creating mentally and physically interactive field games for children enrolled in Helena’s School-Age Child Care summer program.

Global Youth Service Day 2013

Montana Education Partnership partnered with Helena’s School-Age Child Care program to host a Global Youth Service Day project for elementary school students.  Fourth and fifth grade students participating in the School-Age Child Care program investigated and facilitated a nutrition project with their peers. Student leaders worked together to educate and guide younger students in the construction of their own healthy place mats to be taken home and shared with their families.
